This is an excerpt of the short backstory behind Viveka Kaster, one of the characters from Gunnar's Guns, an upcoming novel.

"You cheating @#$&!"

"Me? I'm not the one pimping myself out!"

Viveka Kaster wedged herself deeper under her bed, clutching a pillow over her face. Now matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shut out her parents' screaming. They often argued, but recently it had become worse, and this one was rapidly escalating.

"I flirted with my boss over a drink so that he might remember me next time he hands out promotions. At least I didn't sleep with my secretary!"

"Why are you bringing that up again? This was supposed to be a vacation!"

Viveka had just turned six a few days earlier, and she knew this only because her father had given her a birthday gift that morning. Her mother had promptly chewed him out for forgetting and being several days late. In response, he'd snapped that she had forgotten Viveka's birthday as well. So, yet another fight had ensued.

She hadn't understood that fight any more than any of the rest. She knew neither of them cared about her birthday. They had forgotten it before. For as often as they used her as ammunition against each other, they largely ignored her otherwise. She had been taking her own baths and scrounging her own meals out of the refrigerator for over a year now. She had learned the hard way how to tell spoiled milk from good, and what things tasted edible cold or uncooked.

Something smashed. It sounded like the living room lamp. Viveka flinched. She could all too clearly imagine the shards of colorful glass spraying across the floor. She had seen more plates, vases, and glasses dashed to pieces than she wanted to remember.

"I'm leaving!" Her mother's scream was followed by angry steps pounding up the stairs.

"Fine!" From downstairs came a slam. There was always a slamming door.

Viveka could hear her mother snarling vindictively and throwing around luggage. She hugged the pillow tighter. She knew better than to get in the way when either her mother or her father was upset. Her arm was still bruised from the last time she had made that mistake.

Pretty soon, steps pounded on the stairs, followed by another slam of the front door.

Silence. Viveka wiped her face on the pillow. It was better when they were gone. It was lonely but not as scary. She wiggled across the carpet to the edge of her bed and peeked from under the bed skirt. Was it safe to come out?

How this works:

-I post a snip of a random story I wrote, a character bio, a summary blurb, etc.
-If I get favorable comments, I will post more snips from the same story.
-If someone just loves what they read (oh, be honest, I'm not asking for pity praise, or exaggerations :XD:), then I might post a whole chapter or story, depending on the situation.
