I have no idea why I used a leather strip. I haven't used leather on any before or since. But, I guess it works. :shrug:

Bash Bastill was a brute of a man, and a police officer on top of that. He kept order on the expansive space station he called home. Tough spacers and vicious criminals alike learned fear when they crossed Officer Bastill, and women and children gazed at him in adoration. To his young son, Tyr, that was solid evidence that his dad was a superhero.

But as seven-year-old Tyr knelt at his father's side, gaping in horror at the blood pooling on the decking, he knew he had been wrong. Superheroes could not be brought down by a single stab to the chest.

When the thug had come crashing out of the electronics store, it never seemed to cross Bash's mind that he was with his son, or that he was off-duty. With a lunge and one swing of his thick arm, he had swept the man so far off his feet that Tyr had felt the impact of him landing from ten feet away.

Bash was a no-nonsense man, direct in comment and blunt in combat. No one had ever challenged him to a fight. Perhaps this was why he didn't sense the second thug dart out of the crowd behind him. By the time Bash turned around, the man was almost pressed up against him, too close to punch or shoot. The knife had flashed through the few inches of separation.

The man slipped out of Bash's grasping hands and vanished down the grey corridors before Tyr even understood what had happened. Then Bash collapsed.

"Dad?" Tyr ran to his father, confused, and then he saw the blood. "Dad!"
