Belle (Gunnar's Guns)

Description

This is Belle. She's a kitten rescued by Max Rygecroft, one of Gunnar's Guns.

This is the fancier version. I got in the mood to mess around with art.

It wasn't until Lexi was back in the infirmary that evening that her day brightened at all. She thought it was more bad news at first, and her stomach felt heavy when she saw Max waiting inside for her.

"Hi, Max." Lexi didn't see anything broken or bleeding on the big, dark man. "What's wrong?"

Max shuffled uncomfortably, his hands behind his back.

Lexi groaned inwardly. He looked embarrassed. Which likely meant she was about to be embarrassed. But she was the ship's medic, so she had to ask. "Well, I can't help you if you don't tell me. What's bothering you?"

Max's eyes roamed all over the floor before he finally spoke. "I know you're a people doctor, Ms. Ryder . . . but . . ."

Why would Max say that? Did he suspect she wasn't? Lexi swallowed hard. Had something given her away?

He brought his hands into view. One of them held a small duffle bag. He set it gingerly on the table and unzipped it. His face contorted with regret. "Please don't tell anyone, doc. I . . . I think I broke him."

Lexi frowned and peered into the bag nervously. A tiny paw poked out, followed by any even tinier mew. She gasped and opened the bag wider. "You got a kitten! Aww!"

Her delight improved Max's mood and courage. He smiled and then it faded sadly. "I found him on our last mission, in the hands of a . . ."

For a second, Lexi thought the big man might cry. He took a breath, and his face hardened. "A dead kid. Well, a dead kid ain't gonna take care of a kitten, now is he?"

"No," Lexi agreed gently. She petted the tiny head with her finger. The kitten couldn't be more than three or four weeks old. It pawed her finger, catching needle-like claws on her skin. She lifted the paw free and started examining it. "What's wrong?"

"I shut his tail in a cupboard door accidentally. I—I think I broke something." Max shot her a pleading look. "Can you help him? I know he's really tiny, but . . . I thought maybe . . ."

Lexi grinned. "Yes, I can. Have a seat."

While Max watched anxiously, Lexi inspected the kitten's stubby tail. It was kinked, and the skin was bloody. She tried not to cause it too much pain as she probed. Then she pulled carefully. The kitten squealed pitifully, and Max jumped up.

"Relax." Lexi waved him back. "The tail was only dislocated. I set it. He'll be fine."

She cleaned and disinfected the small tear in the skin and glued it shut. "Good as new."

Max beamed at her. "Thank you!"

Lexi shooed his eager hands away. "I'm not done yet. Let me give him a checkup."

The kitten, a gray tabby with a white chest and underbelly, was completely normal and healthy. Lexi smiled, told him as much, and then added, "It's a girl, by the way."

"You can tell?" Max looked surprised. "You're a better doctor than I thought! I mean, you're a people doctor. I didn't think you'd know anything about animals."

"Er, well, my mother was a vet. She taught me some stuff." Lexi gulped, keeping her gaze on the kitten. Since she was the medic, the crew trusted their lives to her, but what if they knew the truth? What would happen if they found out her only experience with medicine was from being a veterinary assistant?

"I'm going to name her Belle." Max stroked the kitten and smiled at it like a proud father. "It means beautiful."

Lexi tried not to laugh at him, but her mirth must have showed.

"Don't laugh! I'm going to name my daughter that when I get home. If I have a daughter."

"You're married?" Lexi saw he wore no wedding ring.

"No." He smiled distantly. "I will marry her when I get to go back home, though."

"Fiancée?" Lexi grinned.

"Not yet."

"Well, who is she, Max?" Lexi pressed

"Dinah Callister. I knew her in school," he said fondly. "She's not married yet, and she's the perfect woman! She'll make a great mother. I know because she adopted two kids already."

His wording struck Lexi as odd. "Wait, you talk about her like she doesn't know you're interested in her."

"She doesn't," he admitted, but then he brightened. "But she will! I'll be good to her. She loves animals, too, you know."

Lexi laughed. Max spoke simply, but he was far from dumb, what she'd seen of him, and he had a heart to be envious of. "I bet she'll fall head over heels for you and Belle both."

"You're awfully kind, Ms. Ryder."

"Call me Lexi, please."

He nodded and scooped the kitten carefully back into the bag. "Oh, um. Please don't tell anyone about Belle. We're not allowed to have pets."

The colors used in this drawing are amazing! I love the way you shaded it and did the background!

And sorry about the request all the way from July twenty third, I haven't exactly been active for a while and the request for this image in my group gallery expired. You can send another request if you'd like.
